The Honorable Lamar Alexander
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Alexander,
I have just learned of your denial of the request to call Betsy DeVos back for a second hearing to discuss her confirmation as Secretary of Education.
Your reasoning is as troubling as it is disappointing. Rather than doing your duty and weighing the request based solely on the merit of the candidate, you chose political revenge as your justification for denying such a request. That is petty and beneath the office and position which you hold.
Political favors and loyalties you hold with our new President should not interfere with your ability to do what is best for the American people. If you truly feel that Betsy DeVos is a qualified candidate to fill the position of Secretary of Education, you owe it to me and my fellow citizens to have her appear for another round of questioning. Help us see whatever it is she’s shown you that she will make a competent Secretary of Education, despite the fact that she has little relevant experience or enough comprehension of the vast federal agency she will oversee.
Based on the sole hearing you’ve allowed, it is clear that Betsy DeVos wouldn’t be qualified to run a school as a principal, let alone be confirmed as Secretary of Education.
You don’t have to know the price of a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs to know what you’re doing is wrong. Do the right thing for America. Let’s have one more hearing and help Betsy DeVos prove to the American people she is actually the right person for the job.
